Engineered Solutions

End-to-End Power Distribution

PwrQ’s Engineered Solutions bring together decades of power systems experience, deep technical expertise, and a collaborative mindset to solve complex infrastructure challenges. Our in-house electrical and application engineering teams design systems that span the complete single-line diagram—from utility service entrance to the point of load—ensuring every component and connection is optimized for performance, safety, and long-term reliability.

We specialize in engineering power systems for mission-critical environments where uptime and scalability are non-negotiable. Whether supporting a hyperscale data center, a hospital campus, or a high-demand industrial facility, our engineers work closely with customers, contractors, and consultants to deliver systems that meet strict technical specifications, compliance standards, and fast-paced construction schedules.

Our approach is both product- and solution-oriented. We leverage our full line of in-house manufactured equipment—including low voltage switchboards, PDUs, RPPs, panelboards, and ATS units—while integrating vendor-agnostic components from our trusted partners when needed. This flexibility allows us to design each system to meet project-specific needs while ensuring consistency, quality, and rapid execution across the board.

With every engineered solution, PwrQ prioritizes seamless system integration, modularity, and future scalability. We think beyond the gear—factoring in utility coordination, load growth, operational constraints, and long-term maintenance—to deliver systems that perform on day one and evolve with your facility over time.

While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they serve distinct purposes and have unique characteristics. This blog aims to share knowledge about the correct terminology and ensure a clear understanding of these equipment. Here’s how switchboards differ from switchgear.

What is a Switchboard?

A switchboard is a critical component in electrical distribution systems, designed to distribute power from single or multiple sources to multiple loads. UL-891 switchboards, such as the PwrQ S1 Switchboard, are a perfect fit for data centers and other critical facilities where reliability and rapid deployment are essential.

View Open positions

Key Features of Switchboards:

  • Voltage Ratings: Switchboards are generally rated for low-voltage applications (up to 600V) and can handle up to 6000A with the S1 Switchboard from PwrQ
  • Construction: Minimum depth of 18 inches with front access; group mounting is typically limited to 2000A
  • Applications: Ideal for critical facilities such as data centers, commercial buildings, and small to medium-sized industrial settings
  • Breaker Types: Utilizes UL 489 molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) ranging from 100A to 2500A
  • Fault Current Testing: Designed for a 3-cycle fault current duration
  • 7. Standards Compliance: Adheres to standards like UL 891 for safety and performance

Switchboards are often chosen for environments where compactness, straightforward power distribution, and rapid deployment are prioritized. With PwrQ’s UL-891 switchboards, you benefit from industry-leading lead times and dependable performance tailored to meet your specific needs.

What is a Switchgear?

Switchgear is a more complex system that provides power distribution and protection for electrical circuits. It is primarily used in applications where higher voltage ratings and enhanced safety features are required.

View Open positions

Key Features of Switchgear:

  • Voltage Ratings: Suitable for low-voltage applications up to 1000V
  • Construction: Minimum depth of 54 inches (40 inches for front access only) and typically requires both front and rear access. Switchgear is designed with compartmentalized construction for enhanced safety and maintenance
  • Applications: Commonly found in substations, utility systems, and critical infrastructure where operational reliability is paramount
  • Breaker Types: Utilizes UL 1066 drawout circuit breakers ranging from 800A to 6000A
  • Fault Current Testing: Designed for a 4-cycle fault current duration and includes a 30-cycle withstand rating
  • Primary Function: Provides power distribution, circuit protection, and system control to prevent electrical faults
  • Standards Compliance: Complies with UL 1558 standards for low-voltage switchgear

While switchgear systems are designed for more demanding environments, they often come with longer lead times and higher costs, making them less suitable for facilities prioritizing efficiency and speed.

PwrQ delivers end-to-end power distribution solutions that seamlessly integrate engineering, manufacturing, and service capabilities. From the drawing board to deployment, we ensure every component and system is built for reliability, scalability, and performance—tailored to the critical demands of sectors like data centers, renewables, and high-visibility commercial and industrial facilities.

Whether you require switchboards or switchgear, PwrQ is equipped to provide solutions that meet your needs. Contact us to learn more about how we can support your project’s success.
